Hiroshi Jashiki was born in Okinawa, a chain of islands situated between Japan, Taiwan, and China. Although Okinawa is now part of Japan, at one time it was an independent kingdom, and later occupied by China, Japan, and United States. The US occupation lasted from 1945 to 1972 and still 22% of prime land is used for US army and marine bases. Having a Filipino father and Okinawan mother, and growing up in this semi-tropical, amazingly diverse island, his interests in arts and crafts, and international cultural sense came naturally from his earliest years. Okinawa was and remains a strong foundation for his art.

Jashiki went to Ryukyu University in Okinawa where he studied arts and crafts including traditional weaving and ceramics. Later he studied abroad at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where he received his MFA in Fiber Art.

Upon graduating from Cranbrook Jashiki moved to New York and started working as textile designer. He took fashion technical courses at FIT at night and worked as an  apparel designer as well. His current field is men’s and women’s soft accessories. He worked as an Accessory designer for Calvin Klein for eight years. He teaches a textile design course at Okinawa Geidai (Art and Design University) every other year.

Jashiki’s recent interest is in print, using textile software as a tool to create images inspired by the nature, Okinawa, Japan, urban living, New York, etc. Hiroshi Jashiki have exhibited his work at the Cranbrook Art Museum, at the Okinawa Prefecture Contemporary Art Museum, and at Atos Gallery in Naha. In 2008, he will exhibit new work at Global Gallery in Okinawa City.
